How to Make Homemade Toothpaste

Best Homemade ToothpasteOral health is vitally important for overall health.  Your mouth is full of bacteria, usually harmless of course.  Daily care like brushing and flossing, along with the body’s ability to fight off bacteria naturally, help to keep this bacteria under control; however, without proper oral care, the bacteria can cause some pretty major conditions like gum disease and tooth decay that can leak into the bloodstream and affect the rest of the body.

The easiest thing you can do to avoid these complications is brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day.  However, the wide variety of selections in the toothpaste aisle is dizzying, and many contain fluoride, a harmful toxin that has never actually been shown to reduce tooth decay.  It’s also been linked to cognitive difficulties and thyroid problems, so in essence it’s best to avoid fluoride products as much as possible.

Luckily, making a good homemade toothpaste is easy and safe, using natural products that are not poisonous to the body.  The below is one of the better natural toothpaste recipes because it includes a mix of all the best ingredients that actually fight decay, gum disease, fight tartar, and even whiten.

  • ½ cup of raw coconut oil
  • 3 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 2 packets of powdered Stevia
  • About 20 drops of cinnamon or peppermint essential oil
  • Grapefruit Seed Extract can be added, which strengthens teeth enamel and fights off bacterial infections. Use about 7-10 drops.
  • Also optional, you can add 7-10 drops of Myrrh extract to help fight any gum disease or decay.

Step-By-Step on How to Make It

  • Melt the coconut oil to soften. This can be done just by putting it near a window on a warm day, or you can soften it in the microwave or stovetop.  It doesn’t need to boil, just soften.
  • Once it’s melted or softened, mix in all the other ingredients and stir well. If you are mixing into semi-hard oil, then use a fork to stir in the ingredients.  If it’s softened or melted completely, use a spoon and stir frequently until the oil is cooled.
  • Put the mixture into a small jar or cup that can be covered. This mixture can be used just for one person because you need to dip your toothbrush into it.  If you are making this for an entire family, be sure to use different jars for each member.
  • Let the mixture cool completely. It’s okay if it’s soft when you use it.
